Bond is set at $5 million after prosecutors said 50-year-old Monroe Elbert admitted stabbing his wife with a butcher knife and abusing his eight-year-old stepson to police on Monday. Elbert waived his Miranda rights on Feb. 5 after he was taken into custody by police following the discovery of his wife’s body at their 610 N. McLean St. home. States Attorney Jason Chambers said Monroe Elbert told detectives he was arguing with his wife on Monday when she went upstairs to pack her belongings and leave the home. Monroe Elbert told police he grabbed a butcher knife, followed Nicole Elbert upstairs, where they continued an argument over “activity on her cell phone” before he stabbed her multiple times. Police received a 911 call from Monroe Elbert stating he killed his wife a short time later, prosecutors said. Monroe Elbert was also charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a child in connection with two injuries to Elbert’s eight-year-old stepson in 2017.
