In a 5-2 vote Monday evening, Normal town council members voted to approve the Welcoming City ordinance that would offer protection to illegal immigrants and access to public services without fear of deportation.
Council members Jeff Fritzen and Scott Preston voted against it. They each expressed concern about whether becoming a Welcoming City would blur the lines that separate council from a group that creates policy into a body that oversees operations.
A pro Welcoming City rally was held in the Uptown Circle prior to last night’s council meeting by the coalition of groups favoring the ordinance.
