A 25-year-old Dylan Baerwald of Bloomington is dead after the car he was a passenger in struck a tree just west of the city.
McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage and McLean County Coroner Kathy Davis said the vehicle was heading south on County Road 1000E early Thursday morning when it failed to stop at Illinois Route 9, eventually striking a tree. Baerwald died of head injuries due to the vehicle striking a tree, preliminary autopsy results show.
Toxicology results are pending.
The sheriff said the 23-year-old Bloomington man who was driving the vehicle was booked for aggravated DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, aggravated reckless driving causing bodily harm, obstructing justice and failure to report an accident. The driver will be formally charged in McLean County Court on Friday, the sheriff said in a news release.
The incident remains under investigation.
