It’s not just the governor’s mansion that will be in Democratic hands next year. Democrats won all of Illinois’ statewide offices last night. Kwame Raoul won the election for Attorney General, Susana Mendoza won a second term as Comptroller, Mike Frerichs was re-elected as Treasurer, and Jesse White once again won a term as Secretary of State. J.B. Pritzker, of course, easily won the race for governor.
Illinois Republicans will soon have little to no say in state government. It appears that House Democrats won back a supermajority in the Illinois House. Late last night, Democrats looked on track to have won 72 seats in the House that would put them in the supermajority, and allow Democrats to essentially do what they want in the Illinois General Assembly. Republicans have been in the superminority in the Illinois Senate since 2014.
Other highlights from Tuesday’s elections include a victory for incumbent GOP County Clerk Kathy Michael, the re-elections of GOP Congressmen Rodney Davis and Darin LaHood and the preservation of the Bloomington voting law from a challenge. Meanwhile, the Democrats picked up a pair of McLean County Board seats.
