State Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-Chicago) is sponsoring the Safe Space in Public Places Act. If passed, the law would require walk-through metal detectors to be installed at public entrances at all public entrances for schools, universities, hospitals and courthouses in time for the 2019-2020 school year. The law would also require metal detectors at any special event on campus of an institution of higher learning attended by 1,000 people or more. Ford said the metal detectors would be funded through a $1 billion grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.
