It could be a few more days before the state knows just how much damage the weekend storms left behind. Teams from the state and the National Weather Service were out yesterday, surveying the damage from Saturday’s tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.
The NWS storm teams are putting together all of the information, but the early indications are those were some strong tornadoes in LeRoy and Colfax.
In Colfax, a barn was destroyed and three cows were killed when a power line fell.
The worst of it looks to be Taylorville, where at least one tornado damaged 100 homes and injured about 20 people.
Taylorville Mayor Bruce Barry is telling people that unless you live or work in Taylorville, don’t head into town. The small city about a half-hour southeast of Springfield is essentially closed to outsiders after a tornado cut through town on Saturday.
Mayor Barry says there’s a lot of work to do over the next few weeks and months; he doesn’t want people to come and sight-see the damage.
