Galesburg has already changed over to snow as of 315 am, with accumulation already starting on the roads. The change-over from rain to snow will gradually expand toward the Illinois river through 6 am. Areas southeast of the IL river should remain rain until around sunrise. Far western areas toward Galesburg could see snow accumulation of 2 to 3 inches before precipitation ends this morning. As colder air continues to move in this morning, expect an expansion eastward of the switch back over to snow or freezing drizzle. Areas west of the Illinois River will see some travel concerns before the morning rush to work or school, though some light snow or freezing drizzle may occur after sunrise as far east as Bloomington. Most areas along and south of I-72 can expect periods of rain through mid-morning, changing over to light snow or freezing drizzle before ending by Noon.

A 24-hour period of dangerously cold weather will be on tap late this week. By late Thursday night and early Friday, most of central Illinois will see wind chills in the 15 below to 30 below zero range, as actual temperatures fall below zero north of I-70. Such cold weather can cause frostbite or hypothermia in a short amount of time, for people not adequately dressed for the cold. Keep this in mind when you’re getting ready for work or school on Friday.
