Saying that he would only put doubling the local gasoline tax on the city council agenda if he had a majority of aldermen supporting it, Bloomington CIty Manager Tim Gleason is going forward with it next week.
Gleason tells the Pantagraph “He feels comfortable the majority favors it, so that is why it will be on the agenda Monday night.”
At issue is whether to raise the city’s motor fuel tax from 4 cents to cents. If passed, Gleason says it would enable to the city raise $6.5 million a year that would be dedicated to street work from sidewalk to sidewalk.
Bloomington put a 4-cent per gallon local fuel tax into effect in August 2014. This would be the second hike in 5 years with many citizens still complaining there is little to show for that first hike.
