A statewide ban on privately-run immigration detention facilities overwhelmingly passed the Illinois House on Wednesday.
Lawmakers voted 85-26 on House Bill 2040, which essentially seeks to bar private companies from running detention centers for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the state of Illinois.
As written, House Bill 2040 would endanger the agreement between the village of Dwight and ICA.
ICE is currently looking to build a new detention facility within 80 miles of Chicago.
