The Illinois House may vote today on an amendment to the state’s abortion rights bill. The House committee voted last night in support of an amendment that would replace the state’s current abortion law with one that doesn’t include measures involving spousal consent, waiting periods, criminal penalties for physicians who perform abortions and other restrictions on facilities where abortions are performed. There has been a renewed sense of urgency behind the change after several states passed restrictive abortion laws. Originally in House Bill 2495, the Reproductive Health Act was filed as an amendment to Senate Bill 25 and heard in the Appropriations-Human Services committee as House members returned to action on a holiday weekend as Friday’s end-of-session deadline approaches.
