Bloomington City Council members said on Monday the city should consider how it might regulate marijuana dispensaries through zoning as the council decides whether it will allow such businesses when recreational cannabis sales become legal in January.
City Manager Tim Gleason plans to present the council with a pot proposal next Monday to start the zoning process after taking an informal vote during Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
Normal Town Council was also scheduled to discuss a motion to initiate a zoning text amendment concerning the regulation of cannabis facilities. But prior to both meetings on Monday, former Normal Town Councilor Jeff Fritzen urged both governing bodies to opt out of allowing recreational marijuana dispensaries saying the high concentration of young adults in Bloomington-Normal as a college town make is particularly susceptible to marijuana abuse.
The Normal City Council ended up sending the issue to Normal Planning Commission, which will hold a public hearing on November 7th at 5 p.m. that day on the fourth floor at Uptown Station.
