The McLean County Disaster Council will hold its 50th anniversary celebration on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at the former Central Illinois Regional Airport terminal building, 2901 E. Empire in Bloomington. An open house from 4:00 p.m. – 6 :00 p.m. will feature emergency response vehicles and equipment from member agencies, showcase the Disaster Council’s history and provide an opportunity for the general public to meet members and learn more about the Disaster Council’s role in the community.
The McLean County Disaster Council (MCDC) was founded in 1969 to promote cooperation and assistance among governmental bodies, private and community agencies in disaster operations.
On May 8, 1969, the McLean County Disaster Council met for the first time in Bloomington, Illinois. Community leaders exchanged ideas on communications, emergency housing, transport and feeding, and command and control of the disaster site. The goal of the first meeting was to offer aid and assistance through the resources of the council to any governmental body, community agency, or private group within McLean County. Since then, many changes have evolved. One concept that has not changed is the belief by all council members that during a disaster, everyone must work together for the common good.
“The original concept of the McLean County Disaster Council remains true today. Planning and training for the unexpected major event in our community requires cooperation among many entities with various resources,” said David Hopper, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the McLean County Health Department and current MCDC President. “The ability to respond quickly and effectively is crucial during a disaster event and the networking afforded the members of the Council is another key part of the preparation.”
The MCDC conducts an annual exercise each year to test the community’s emergency preparedness. These are held at different locations presenting various scenarios including weather catastrophes, active shooter situations, transportation incidents, pandemics and others.
Membership includes hospital personnel, the health department, the American Red Cross, business and industrial representatives, colleges and universities, airport representatives, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, social service agencies, emergency management agencies, the county coroner, emergency dispatch personnel, utilities and local government officials and representatives.
