(WTAX) Like it or not, displays promoting — and opposing — various religions are welcome in the Capitol Rotunda.
For the second year in a row, the Satanic Temple of Chicago has made its presence known with a sculpture of a raised hand gripping a black apple. The base of the sculpture reads, “Knowledge Is the Greatest Gift.” The organization describes itself as “nontheist.”
You can also expect to see a menorah and Nativity scene, as well as a sign from the Freedom from Religion Foundation — and a sign from the secretary of state’s office explaining how everything else there is welcome.
“Otherwise, you run the risk of not allowing any of the displays in the Rotunda whatsoever,” said secretary of state spokesman Henry Haupt. “We’ve worked with these groups for a number of years, and they appreciate the fact that they are allowed to express their freedom of speech and place their display here, and we hope that would continue.”
