A winter storm system will pass through Illinois Friday and Saturday. Snow is expected to begin accumulating late Friday morning to Friday afternoon. Significant travel impacts are likely for the Friday afternoon and evening commutes. One to 3 inches of snow will accumulate through Friday evening across much of central Illinois before precipitation transitions to a wintry mix including freezing rain and possibly some sleet late Friday afternoon through Friday evening. Some roads could get ice accumulation for a time Friday evening. The wintry mix will become all rain by around midnight as temperature rise above freezing. Total precipitation amounts around 1 to 1.5 inches appear likely by Saturday, which could worsen river flooding. The system could end as a period of Saturday morning, especially west of I-55. Keep updated with the forecast as details about this system evolve.
