Connect Transit is very supportive of our veterans. Several of our employees are Veterans themselves and many more have immediate family and friends who are Veterans.
Prior to the VA Clinic opening in Bloomington, Connect staff held various meetings with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, City of Bloomington, AMVETS, and other veterans themselves to discuss bus service for the VA Clinic. In addition to these agencies, we have also had discussions with our U.S. Congressional delegation about serving the local VA Clinic.
The Veterans are absolutely not without service to the VA Clinic and actually have access to door-to-door service since it opened in November 2019. Before the VA Clinic opened, Connect invested in a shelter that is ADA compliant, and the City of Bloomington fixed the sidewalk leading to the VA Clinic.
The Veterans that cannot navigate the fixed route system have an option through Connect Mobility. The Connect Mobility service will take riders from the front door of their home to the front door of their destination. This means all Veterans have front door access if they need it. Connect also agreed to waive the application process for Veterans needing transportation to the VA Clinic. The cost for a Veteran to ride the fixed route bus or Connect Mobility is the same at $1.25.
All of the discussions that Connect conducted with various Veteran agencies and Veterans themselves prior to the opening of the VA Clinic ensured reliable transportation options to the VA Clinic.
Connect Transit has provided safe, reliable and affordable public transportation to the Bloomington-Normal community since 1972.
