Democrats in the General Assembly passed new legislative and state Supreme Court maps Friday night and now House Republicans are asking Governor JB Pritzker to veto the maps.
Pritzker long promised to veto any gerrymandered maps, including earlier this year. On the campaign trail in 2018, Pritzker supported an amendment to Illinois’ constitution to take the redistricting process out of state legislators’ hands and instead send it to an independent commission.
But the governor recently flip-flopped on the veto promise, saying he trusted lawmakers to create a fair map.

He also responded to a question concerning what would happen if the governor did veto the measure. Friday night, Republican Leader Jim Durkin asked the Democrat sponsor if they would override the governor’s veto. He said Durkin never received an answer.
