A Bloomington Resident Mary Carlisle Is Calling For Bloomington Library Resignations and On the Mayor to Stop Funding Porn In the Public Library
It has recently come to the attention of many people including myself that the Bloomington Public Library has utterly failed in their responsibility to adequately monitor the Children’s Department of the library. Although the inappropriate display in question was situated between the Adult and the Children’s Departments, it still remains an incredibly significant issue that must be addressed. In short, pornography should not be available in the library.
Examples are as follows: Book- Patience & Esther, graphic drawings of close up reproductive organs used in threesomes, Author-S.W. Searle. Description-”a steamy ‘Adults Only’ period romance, and an inspirational erotic journey…” This as right next to the children’s book, Guess How Much I Love You. In another book, Wendy, an art student, includes sex, drugs, alcohol, and a rape scene is depicted. Next to it, a children’s book called, I Like Myself.
The employees of the library have demonstrated their obvious inability to properly discern what is, and what is not, appropriate material for young children.
Why has any of our taxpayer money or private library donations gone towards the purchase of pornography? A taxpayer funded public library is most assuredly not the place for pornographic books or displays.
How would you feel if one of your own children had come upon such a display and started looking through these adult books situated near children’s books?
On the outside, these books looked innocent enough. On the inside, the pornographic pictures were triple-X rated.
No parent should have to worry that their children will find pornographic adult books available at the library right next to children’s books. As parents, it is our responsibility to protect the innocence of our children for as long as we can.
I am respectfully asking that those employees responsible for putting this display together be immediately removed from employment. People employed in the private sector are constantly held responsible for similarly inappropriate actions and subsequently removed from employment. Employees who are compensated with our hard-earned tax dollars should likewise be held to the same high standards. Additionally, the current library board members should be replaced. They have effectively failed in their responsibility to provide the proper oversight that the appointment requires. They must be replaced with residents of Bloomington who are much more qualified.
While the display has been removed, the fact remains: this was unacceptable and the pornography needs to be removed. I’m sure a local establishment would gladly accept the donation of books. To be clear, this is not about censorship. People who like pornography are welcome to get their own books with their own money. The taxpayer bears no moral or ethical responsibility to supply them with their books. Anyone who would argue in defense of providing pornographic material in a public library at the expense of the taxpayers has extremely misguided priorities.
To the Mayor Of Bloomington Mboka Mwilambwe I offer this: Please provide leadership and oversight where it is badly needed at this time. Please do not send the message that you, as well, tacitly approve of pornography being purchased with taxpayer money and that pornography should be available to children. Your response will speak volumes. I truly hope you are a man of integrity and do what is required of you at this very important time on this very important issue.
