As temperatures warm up, spring weather is right around the corner. That also means severe storms with high winds and hail. Did you know that HAIL is the #1 catastrophe claim for insurance companies. Hail surpasses tornados and hurricane winds for structure and auto damage claims. So how does Illinois compare to other states when it came to hail claims in 2021?
Last year, State Farm paid $2.5 BILLION for over 255,000 hail claims. Illinois was ranked #4 in the nation with $187 MILLION in paid claims. Damage from hail includes vehicle windshields and sunroofs to gutters, windows, and roofs on homes.
So what can a person do to prepare for hail damage?
Be weather aware: Stay connected to forecasts when severe weather threatens.
Update home inventory: Take pictures and video of your property for a detailed digital record.
Preparation: If there’s time and it’s safe, put vehicles in the garage and move patio furniture to cover. Close you blinds and curtains to prevent broken glass from blowing inside possibly causing injuries or damage.
Know your insurance coverage: Call your insurance agent and review your coverage. After a storm has caused damage is not the time to find out your coverage is outdated.
