“China has a plan to replace us,” Congressman Darin Lahood told attendees at the Reagan Birthday dinner at Eureka College on Thursday night. “And they are working on it every single day. And the sooner we wake up to that the better our country is going to be.”
Lahood, Illinois’ U. S. House Representative from the 16th district has been appointed to the Select Committee on China. He continued, “So this select committee on China is going to have 11 Republicans and 9 Democrats. We are going to work in a nonpartisan way coming up with specific solutions on what we can do.”
“We need to focus on this every single day because whether it is national security issues, whether it is technological issues, whether it’s economic issues, trade issues, diplomatic issues, this is not going away. And so I look forward to taking on that responsibility going forward,” Lahood said.
In an interview with Cities 92.9 Lahood expanded his remarks on China. “We have to support Taiwan with building up there weaponry there,” he said.
Given a green light to continue discussing China, Lahood said, “Let me remind people, regardless of what you think about Putin’s invasion of Ukraine … that was an illegal unprovoked invasion of a sovereign independent country. The number one backer of Putin is Xi Jinping of China.”
“China wants to see the west defeated in Ukraine. He (Jinping) wants to see the U. S. go down. And so the only other allies that Putin has are Iran, the largest state sponsor of terrorism and N. Korea. So we need to again, make sure that, that support for Putin is unacceptable. So that will be a big focus on what we are doing,” Lahood stated.

The event was presented by the Ronald W. Reagan Society and held in the Terrill Rooms of the Donald B. Cerf Center on the campus of Eureka College. It began with cocktails at 6 p.m., with the dinner following at 7 p.m. It celebrated the upcoming 112th anniversary of President Ronald W. Reagan’s birthday on February the sixth.
Recognized at the event were the college’s Reagan Fellows. President Reagan funded this scholarship opportunity during his first term in office. Reagan Fellows receive; a four-year full-tuition scholarship to attend Eureka College, stipends to cover the program’s special travel and mentoring opportunities and two on-site mentorships with prominent leaders. Up to four Reagan Fellows are accepted each year.
Reagan entered Eureka College in the fall of 1928. During his four years he lettered in football, track, and swimming. Reagan was president of the student government his senior year. In 1932 He he graduated with degrees in economics and sociology.
The Cerf Center at Eureka College hosts the Ronald Reagan Museum. The museum contains over 2000 items from Reagan’s college days, his movie career, his eight years as Governor of California, his campaign for the presidency and his two terms as President of the United States.
