Overflow Action Alert issued
Chicago residents are being asked to reduce their water usage, as heavy rain is expected to affect the region in the coming days thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Beryl.
An Overflow Action Alert was issued Tuesday as the storm brings heavy rain and a chance of flooding. According to the alert, residents are being asked to reduce their water consumption to help keep area sewers clear ahead of the forecasted rain.
Most of Illinois received rain from the tropical system, with some areas receiving several inches.
Convicted murderer asks for new trial
The sentencing for a man convicted of murdering a Chicago police officer has been postponed after his defense asked for a new trial.
Emonte Morgan, 23, is convicted of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder in the death of Officer Ella French.
In a criminal courtroom Tuesday, Morgan’s defense attorneys filed a motion for a new trial. The hearing on the motion is set for Sept. 11. If the judge declines the request, Morgan will be sentenced that same day.
Scam warning
Illinois State Police are warning the public of a phone scam circulating in Illinois. The text says the recipient owes toll money and provides a link to pay. Police say to not click on the link.
Police say the scammer’s text message comes from the 263 area code, which is located in Canada. The scammer also misspells tollway with two words.
