The Bloomington City Council has officially approved a $6.8 million contract with locally owned
Rowe Construction for extensive roadwork, finally tackling some of our city’s roughest roads.
The contract includes the following road segments slated for improvement:
Fort Jesse Rd.: Hershey Rd. to Lake Shore Dr.
General Electric Rd.: West of Hershey Rd. to west of Towanda Barnes Rd.
Six Points Rd.: Oakland Ave. to Longden Ave.
Ridgewood Dr.: Main St. to end.
McGregor St.: Lincoln St. to Lafayette St.
Meadowbrook Dr.: McGregor St. to Lafayette St.
Conley Cir.: Meadowbrook Dr. to McGregor St.
Magnolia Dr.: Lincoln St. to Lafayette St.
Fort Jesse Rd.: Lake Shore Dr. to Kaisner Dr.
“Approving this contract represents a significant investment in our city’s infrastructure. By targeting these roadways, that are both highly deteriorating and the subject of frequently complaints, residents and visitors will see a noticeable difference in our community. It’s exciting to finally tackle these long-standing road issues.” said City Manager Jeff Jurgens.
This work is in addition to the nearly $11 million of roadway and sidewalk improvements currently underway and being funded by the City as well as other improvements being made by the State of Illinois on Route 9. The work from the State includes roadway and sidewalk improvements to Market Street from Dr. M L King Jr Drive to Hinshaw Avenue, including portions of White Oak Road and Hinshaw Avenue just north of Market Street as a cost of $9 million.
“With all of the roadwork currently underway and planned in the near future, City staff will be putting more focus on keeping the community informed of road closures and detours,” added
Jurgens.
The roadwork is expected to begin in fall 2024, with the majority of the work taking place in spring and summer 2025. The city is committed to minimizing disruptions during construction and will provide regular updates on progress and any potential impacts on traffic. So, while there might be a few bumps in the road during construction, rest assured they’re the kind that will lead to a smoother journey.
Residents and businesses in the affected areas are encouraged to stay informed through bloomingtonstreets.com and social media channels. The city appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as these essential improvements are carried out.
