Two adults and three children have been displaced after a fire caused by unattended cooking.
Bloomington Fire Dept said in a news release that at 12:26 p.m. on Wednesday on East Jefferson Street, crews responded to a house fire.
Arriving units encountered smoke and flames from the rear of the two-story home, prompting a Box Alarm for additional assistance. Engine 1 and Medic 3 quickly accessed the front door, discovered the fire in the kitchen, and extinguished it using less than 100 gallons of water.
The blaze, caused by unattended cooking, was contained to the kitchen, with smoke and water causing the majority of the damage.
Thankfully, the family of five had safely evacuated before firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported. The fire displaced two adults and three children.
The Bloomington Fire Department reminds residents to avoid placing items on stove tops and to never leave cooking unattended. The family’s quick evacuation plan and functional smoke alarms were crucial, and their renters’ insurance is already addressing recovery efforts.
