Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington is celebrating a significant achievement as it has been awarded accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). This recognition highlights the zoo’s commitment to the highest standards of animal care, conservation, and education, affirming its status among the elite in the zoological community.
The AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission conducted its semi-annual review during the recent Annual Conference held from September 14-19 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Out of 34 applications submitted, an impressive 33 facilities were granted accreditation, underscoring the rigorous standards that AZA facilities must meet.
Dan Ashe, President and CEO of AZA, stated, “Earning AZA accreditation is a mark of excellence and a testament to a zoo or aquarium’s unwavering dedication to the highest standards of animal care and conservation. This achievement celebrates the passion and dedication of the hardworking individuals who make up our community.”
The Accreditation Process
The AZA accreditation process is known for its thoroughness. It involves a detailed application and a meticulous multi-day on-site inspection by a team of independent zoological professionals. The inspection assesses various aspects of the facility, including:
- Animal care and wellbeing
- Veterinary care
- Staff training
- Visitor, staff, and animal safety
- Educational programs
- Conservation efforts
- Financial stability
- Risk management
- Governance
- Guest services
After the inspection, the team prepares detailed reports, which are rigorously evaluated by the Accreditation Commission. The Commission also conducts formal hearings with top officials from the facility before making a final decision on accreditation.
As part of the AZA’s standards, facilities must undergo this rigorous review process every five years to maintain their accredited status.
A Celebration of Excellence
Miller Park Zoo joins an esteemed list of accredited institutions, including the Bronx Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, and the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park, among others. The recognition not only enhances the zoo’s reputation but also ensures that visitors can expect a safe, educational experience where animals are cared for with the utmost attention.
“Congratulations to the zoological parks and aquariums that have earned AZA accreditation,” Ashe added. “Your dedication not only enhances the lives of the animals you care for but also sets the standard for excellence in the zoological community.”
The recent accreditation brings the total number of AZA-accredited facilities to 252 across the United States and 12 other countries, marking a significant achievement in the field of animal care and conservation.
