A standoff in north Normal ended peacefully Thursday after a teen had barricaded himself in a duplex. Police responded to a domestic incident around 1:30 p.m. at Northbrook Drive and Orlando Avenue.
The teen claimed to have a gun, but no weapons were found after he surrendered at 7 p.m. NPD Chief Steve Petrilli credited the crisis negotiation team for the peaceful resolution.
Nearby residents were evacuated, and traffic was blocked. Illinois State University Police and Illinois State Police assisted. Police thanked the public for their cooperation in keeping the area safe.

Normal, IL – October 10, 2024– The intersection of Orlando Avenue and Northbrook Drive is currently closed to all vehicles and pedestrians as authorities respond to an active situation involving an armed subject near this location. Normal Police Department (PD) is on the scene and has advised residents in the area to remain indoors until further notice.
Residents and travelers should avoid the area. No traffic will be allowed past Mexa Maya Restaurant, located in the 600 block of West Orlando Avenue, or past Golfcrest Road on Northbrook Drive. Police have set up roadblocks to secure the perimeter as they work to resolve the situation.
Authorities have urged anyone living in proximity to this intersection to stay inside their homes for safety reasons. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
