Madigan cross begins Monday
The U.S. government’s cross-examination of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is expected to start Monday afternoon at the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago.
Madigan, codefendant Michael McClain, defense attorneys and prosecutors met with Judge John Robert Blakey in court Monday morning without the jury present. Blakey suggested that he would finish jury instructions next weekend and lawyers would have a charge conference Jan. 21.
Closing arguments would be Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 22-24, but could extend to Jan. 27.
Trooper injured in crash
An Illinois State trooper is recovering after being involved in a five-vehicle crash Saturday in South Barrington.
State Police said the trooper was responding to an accident scene with his lights and sirens activated when he was struck by another vehicle at an intersection. According to the East Dundee Fire Protection District, the trooper’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Saturday’s accident happened less than a month after State Police Trooper Clay Carns was killed on I-55 in Will County.
More masking guidelines adopted
Carle Health has joined other Illinois hospitals in implementing mask and visitor guidelines in an effort to reduce the spread of illness.
Starting Monday, masks are urged for those with respiratory illness symptoms, depending on the hospital or clinic. The number of visitors is limited, with most locations only allowing one to two visitors over the age of 18.
