Cities 92.9 received an email on Thursday stating that The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is set to hold an emergency rally on Sunday, March 9, in response to reported efforts to dismantle and privatize the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The event, taking place from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at 1511 E. Empire in Bloomington, aims to raise awareness about potential threats to one of America’s most trusted public institutions.
According to the press release, local letter carriers and supporters will gather to oppose a proposed plan that could strip USPS of its independence, eliminate regulatory oversight, and carve up its operations. The NALC warns that such changes would severely impact universal mail delivery, increase costs for businesses and consumers, and jeopardize millions of jobs tied to the postal industry.
“If enacted, this plan would eliminate the USPS Board of Governors, abolish the Postal Regulatory Commission, and destabilize the entire mailing network,” said an NALC spokesperson. “The Postal Service is a critical part of our nation’s infrastructure, delivering essential goods such as medication and ballots, particularly in rural areas where private carriers do not operate.”
The USPS currently supports a $1.92 trillion mailing industry, with 200,000 letter carriers delivering 376 million pieces of mail daily to nearly 169 million addresses. The NALC warns that these proposed changes would endanger 640,000 postal jobs, including those of over 73,000 veterans.
“The Postal Service is older than the country itself and is protected by the Constitution,” the spokesperson added. “We are calling on all postal supporters to stand with us and send a clear message: Hands off the Postal Service!”
