As St. Patrick’s Day celebrations approach, the Normal Police Department is joining forces with the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation for an enhanced traffic safety campaign. The initiative aims to prevent impaired driving and ensure safer roads during the holiday.
Law enforcement will be on high alert for alcohol- and cannabis-impaired drivers, while also stepping up seat belt enforcement—especially at night, when compliance tends to drop. Officers will strictly enforce laws against speeding, distracted driving, and other traffic violations.
Authorities urge partygoers to prioritize safety when making their plans. If drinking, designate a sober driver or use public transportation or a rideshare service. Pedestrians are also reminded that walking while impaired can be dangerous, and designated drivers should remain cautious of impaired walkers.
Key safety tips include:
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Report impaired drivers to law enforcement.
- Take the keys away from friends who attempt to drive while impaired.
- Always wear a seat belt.
The St. Patrick’s Day enforcement campaign is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT.
