Workers at the Barnes & Noble store in Bloomington, Illinois, have ratified their first union contract, joining three unionized New York City locations in a historic milestone. Represented by the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU), employees secured improved wages, job security, and RWDSU healthcare coverage.
The three-year contract also includes enhanced workplace safety measures such as protective equipment, de-escalation training, and policies allowing workers to step away from unsafe situations without fear of reprisal. Additional provisions include guaranteed pay during store closures and annual anti-discrimination training.
“This contract is a win for our booksellers and baristas,” said Lead Bookseller Zane Crockett, emphasizing the importance of wage increases, job protections, and improved working conditions. RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum praised the agreement as a step toward broader unionization efforts at Barnes & Noble stores nationwide.
