State representative under investigation
State Rep. Thaddeus Jones has paid tens of thousands of dollars this year to a law firm that specializes in criminal defense.
According to the Chicago Tribune, a criminal investigation is ongoing regarding three campaign funds controlled by Jones. Investigators are looking into a series of expenditures by Jones’ campaign, including outings at Chicago Cubs and White Sox games, and nearly $7,000 spent at a Hooters restaurant.
Abbott plans expansion
Abbott Laboratories, which specializes in pharmaceuticals and medical devices, said during a recent earnings call that it plans to invest $500 million in research and development in Illinois and Texas.
The Illinois expansion will take place at the company’s headquarters campus in Abbott Park, which is located in Lake County. The company said it expects to hire about 200 people in Illinois to support the expansion.
Congressional bill would help smaller police departments
An Illinois congressman has introduced legislation aimed at giving support for smaller police departments.
U.S. Rep. Eric Sorenson said the Invest to Protect Act of 2025 would create a fund for small and medium-sized police departments with fewer than 175 officers. The money could be used to recruit, train and retain police officers.
The measure is currently in the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
