Highland Park shooter sentenced to life
The man who admitted to fatally shooting seven people and wounding dozens of others during a 2022 Independence Day parade in Highland Park has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Robert Crimo III, 24, changed his plea to guilty last month just moments before his trial was to begin. In January 2023, the Illinois General Assembly approved a ban on the types of firearms Crimo used in the attack. That law is being challenged in federal court.
Missing man’s body found
The body of a missing Illinois man was recovered Thursday in the Mississippi River.
Police received a call regarding a body in the water near Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Rescue personnel retrieved the body, who was identified as 52-year-old Shane Barendregt. He went missing April 16, after falling into the river from the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge in St. Clair County while being chased by police.
Treasurers’ college loan program
Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs has unveiled a new option to borrow money for in-state higher education costs.
The new Funding U Illinois No-Cosigner Loan is part of the Student Empowerment Fund. Frerichs said his plan is to provide private college loans for Illinois residents at lower rates than private competitors and help bridge the gap with federal financial aid.
