A tragic scene unfolded Monday afternoon when a vehicle crashed into a Chatham after-school camp, killing four children and injuring several others, according to the Illinois State Police.
Around 3:20 p.m., authorities say a vehicle drove into the east side of the YNOT After School Camp at 301 Breckenridge Road. The car struck several people outside the building, continued through the facility, and hit others inside before smashing through the west wall.
Police confirmed four children—believed to be between the ages of 4 and 18—died in the crash. Three of them were outside the building, and one was inside when they were hit.
Emergency crews rushed multiple injured individuals to nearby hospitals. One person was airlifted by helicopter due to the severity of their injuries.
The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was not hurt. They were taken to a local hospital for evaluation, authorities said.
The stretch of Walnut Street between Park Street and Gordon Drive remains closed while investigators work at the scene. The Illinois State Police are handling the investigation with help from the Chatham Police Department.
Officials say the investigation is still active, and no further details were immediately available. Updates will be released as more information is confirmed.
