As part of a statewide requirement from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), some Bloomington residents recently received a packet of information notifying them that their property may have a lead, galvanized, or unknown water service line. These annual notifications are based on the City’s service line inventory and are intended to promote transparency and public awareness.
The City of Bloomington will soon provide additional information to those households to explain what the packet means, how the data was collected, and what steps residents can expect next.
This outreach comes in advance of the City’s upcoming Lead Service Line Replacement Program, set to launch in 2026. The program will offer free replacement of lead and galvanized service lines from the street to the home—eliminating what would otherwise be a significant cost for property owners. This initiative is part of the City’s long-term investment in infrastructure and public health.
“Our drinking water is safe, and we test it regularly to make sure it stays that way,” said City Manager Jeff Jurgens. “This notification is not about an immediate health risk—it’s about meeting state mandates and being transparent with the public as we prepare for a major infrastructure investment that will benefit the community for generations to come.”
