Officers shot in Fairview Heights
Three officers were shot late Saturday in Fairview Heights while responding to calls of a suspicious individual.
One officer was shot in the face and underwent emergency surgery. He is in critical but stable condition.
The Fairview Heights Police Department says the suspect is in custody. Illinois State Police are leading the investigation.
Chicago Teachers Union president reelected
Chicago Teachers Union members have voted to re-elect Stacy Davis Gates as president. Gates and her fellow CORE Caucus candidates won 64% of the vote to defeat Erika Meza and the REAL Caucus, which garnered 36%.
Gates recently led negotiations with Chicago Public Schools on a four-year contract that raises the average CTU teacher’s salary to over $114,000 per year.
CTU has planned another day of lobbying at the Illinois Capitol on Wednesday, May 21.
Cook County hazardous waste drop-off
Cook County officials have broken ground on a $4.6 million facility to be used as a permanent drop-off location for hazardous waste materials.
Residents will be able to dispose of household chemicals, medications, motor oil, pesticides and rechargeable batteries at the South Holland facility. It is expected to open this fall.
