A small basement fire on the city’s northeast side Monday afternoon prompted a multi-unit response from the Bloomington Fire Department but resulted in no injuries and only limited damage.
Firefighters were dispatched to 38 Rounds Road at 4:06 p.m. after residents returned home to find smoke in the building and alarms sounding. According to fire officials, the first crews arrived five minutes later and found no visible smoke or fire from the outside.
Inside, however, firefighters encountered smoke in the basement and quickly deployed a hoseline. Upon further investigation, they discovered a small fire in the ceiling around several light fixtures. Crews used hooks to pull down part of the ceiling and exposed charring on the floor joists.
A box alarm was called to bring additional units to the scene. The fire was contained and extinguished with less than 100 gallons of water, officials said. Firefighters also searched the home to ensure no one was inside. All searches came back negative.
Two residents were displaced by the fire, though no assistance was needed. No civilians or firefighters were injured.
The fire caused smoke and water damage to the duplex. The extent of structural damage is still being assessed, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire crews remained on scene until approximately 7:30 p.m.
