Miller Park Zoo is offering a new touring opportunity for individuals with sensory sensitivities. These tours are designed to encourage participation during quieter times at the zoo.
The hour-long educational tours begin in June and will be held on the first and third Thursdays of each month. First Thursday tours will take place in the morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., while third Thursday tours will run from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Led by KultureCity-trained Miller Park Zoo staff, each tour will feature two animals per month, with both sessions highlighting the same animals. Registration is required, and the fee is $5 per attendee (cash only), payable at the time of the tour. Tours are free for Miller Park Zoological Society members.
To register, please email Silvia Schuh at sschuh@cityblm.org. All ages are welcome, but spots are limited.
KultureCity, founded in 2013, aims to inspire communities to create a world where all autistic individuals are accepted, included, and able to fulfill their potential.
To become KultureCity certified, Miller Park Zoo staff underwent training to recognize guests with sensory needs and respond appropriately to sensory overload situations. Sensory bags, equipped with noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, and verbal cue cards, will also be available.
Miller Park Zoo is located at 1020 S. Morris Avenue, Bloomington, and is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
