The Normal Police Department, in partnership with the McLean County State’s Attorney’s Office, has announced the successful conviction of two individuals in separate criminal sexual assault investigations.
The first case began on June 15, 2023, when police received a report of a sexual assault. Detectives launched an immediate investigation, working closely with the victim and witnesses to identify a suspect. Authorities later arrested 24-year-old Steve Acosta of Bloomington, Illinois, on July 7, 2024, after securing an arrest warrant. Acosta pled guilty to Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault with a Weapon (720 ILCS 5/11-1.30(a)) in McLean County Court on May 8, 2025.
In a separate incident reported on August 26, 2022, Normal Police began investigating another sexual assault case. Their efforts led to the arrest of 37-year-old Carlos Cregan of Normal, Illinois, on March 23, 2023. Cregan was charged and later pled guilty to two offenses: Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse/Victim More Than 5 Years Younger (720 ILCS 5/11-1.60(d)) and Criminal Sexual Assault of a Family Member Under 18 (720 ILCS 5/11-1.20(a)(3)). His guilty plea was entered in court on May 9, 2025.
Both cases underscore the commitment of Normal PD and the State’s Attorney’s Office to pursuing justice for victims of sexual assault through thorough investigations and successful prosecutions.
