Alderman protest ICE actions
Federal authorities have detained an unspecified number of immigrants in Chicago.
Several aldermen joined protesters outside a Department of Homeland Security facility as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents took individuals into custody.
Witnesses said the detentions occurred Wednesday afternoon when undocumented immigrants reported to the office for appointments.
Trade intensity states
Several of Illinois’ neighbors are among the most trade-intensive states in the country.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago assessed the values of states’ imports and exports as shares of gross domestic product. Michigan ranked first with a trade-intensity measure of nearly 33%.
Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin were also among the leaders. According to the Chicago Fed, trade intensity is driven by manufacturing, natural resources and mining.
Air quality alert issued
Dense smoke from wildfires burning in Canada will once again impact skies in Illinois.
Although the entire state will experience some moderate effects, an air quality alert is in effect for the entire Chicago area Thursday and could last into Friday.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency encouraged residents to avoid filling up cars with gas until after sunset, and grouping errands to minimize the number of trips taken.
