Mount Vernon shooting investigation continues
Law enforcement agencies are investigating after a shooting in Mount Vernon early Sunday left two people dead and five others hospitalized.
Mount Vernon Mayor John Lewis said in a statement that the incident happened at a non-sanctioned event attended by more than 100 people.
Lewis said it was disheartening that attendees were not cooperating with the investigation.
Migrant sanctuary challenge dismissed
The U.S. Department of Justice has until Aug. 22 to amend its federal complaint against migrant sanctuary policies throughout the state of Illinois.
A federal district judge Friday ordered the case dismissed without prejudice, saying the DOJ can file an amended complaint in the weeks ahead or the case will be dismissed with prejudice, meaning the DOJ won’t be able to bring the case again.
Drug dealers sentenced
Five drug dealers have been sentenced to federal prison for distributing cocaine, meth or fentanyl in southern Illinois.
Prosecutors say the five were active in Fayette, Jefferson and Marion counties.
The sentences range from 57 to 210 months in prison.
