Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan must report to prison on Oct. 13 after a federal appeals court denied his request to remain free on bond while appealing his corruption conviction.
Madigan, once one of the most powerful Democrats in Illinois, was sentenced to 7½ years following his conviction earlier this year on 10 of 23 counts, including bribery and racketeering.
He has assembled a high-profile appellate legal team, including an attorney who successfully argued a U.S. Supreme Court case last year that narrowed the scope of the federal bribery statute. Madigan’s appeal will be heard by the same federal appellate court that denied his bond request.
