Illinois State University Police arrested 27-year-old Derek Lopez of El Paso, Illinois, on Oct. 17 following an investigation into two recent disruptions at student organization events on campus. Lopez, a graduate student and teaching assistant, was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Damage to Property after allegedly interfering with informational tabling events.
ISU Police Chief Aaron Woodruff emphasized the department’s commitment to protecting both safety and free speech rights on campus, urging students to engage respectfully with differing viewpoints. The case remains under investigation and could result in additional charges or university disciplinary action.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
