A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after Normal firefighters rescued him from a fast-moving mobile home fire early Sunday morning in Northmeadow Village. Crews were dispatched to 865 2nd Street around 1:50 a.m. and arrived within minutes to find the home fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters entered the structure amid intense heat and smoke, locating the teen in a bedroom with no signs of life. Paramedics were able to restore a pulse and breathing while transporting him to the hospital. A second occupant escaped and called 9-1-1, and initial reports of another child inside were later ruled out.
The fire was under control in about 30 minutes, though the home was destroyed. No other injuries were reported. Fire Chief Mick Humer urged residents to check their smoke alarms, calling the incident a reminder of how quickly fire spreads. Investigators are working to determine the cause.
