The National Weather Service in Lincoln says a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of central and west-central Illinois from midnight Friday through 6 a.m. Sunday, with significant snowfall and dangerous travel conditions expected.
Forecasters predict 5 to 8 inches of snow across most of the region, with 9 to 12 inches possible along and north of a line from Macomb to Bloomington. Strong winds and the weight of heavy snow may down tree limbs and power lines, potentially causing scattered outages.
The weather service urges residents to delay travel, noting that roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous. Anyone who must be on the road should use extreme caution and consider carrying a winter emergency kit in case of becoming stranded.
Heavy snow of 6 to 12 inches is expected in much of west-central IL Friday night through Saturday night. The higher amounts will be closer to the I-74 corridor. East-central IL has more uncertainty in amounts, with a heavier, wetter snow, and possible change to rain.
