The Normal Police Department is increasing enforcement efforts throughout April as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, partnering with state and local agencies to target unsafe driving behaviors.
Motorists can expect stepped-up patrols focused on violations such as texting, social media use, and other handheld device activity behind the wheel. Officials say distracted driving remains a major safety issue, contributing to thousands of deaths nationwide each year.
Illinois law prohibits the use of handheld electronic devices while driving, with violations carrying fines and potential impacts on a driver’s record. Police say a zero-tolerance approach will be in place during the campaign.
Drivers are urged to pull over to a safe location before using their phones and to remain fully focused on the road. The enforcement campaign is funded through federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
