Union workers at Illinois State University could walk off the job Wednesday, April 8, if contract negotiations fail to produce an agreement.
Members of AFSCME Local 1110, representing more than 300 buildings, grounds and dining employees, voted in late March to authorize a strike, with 97% in favor. Workers cite low wages, lack of raises for nearly two years and concerns over proposed contract changes.
Negotiations are scheduled to resume Tuesday morning with a mediator. Union leaders say they are prepared to stay at the table but warn a strike will proceed if progress isn’t made. A campus rally is also planned Tuesday afternoon in support of the workers.
