Illinois State University is facing a lawsuit alleging it violated state law by hiring replacement workers during a two-week strike involving more than 300 campus employees.
The suit, filed Tuesday in McLean County Circuit Court by AFSCME Council 31, claims the university illegally contracted with temporary labor companies to perform work typically done by striking building services, grounds, and dining staff. Plaintiffs include union representatives, students, and a local township official.
The lawsuit argues the move violates the Illinois Employment of Strikebreakers Act, which prohibits employers from using temporary labor to replace workers during a strike. Plaintiffs are seeking a court order to block the practice, while union leaders are urging the university to return to negotiations.
