The Bloomington & Normal Trades & Labor Assembly (AFL-CIO) will host a Workers’ Memorial Day ceremony at 6 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, at White Oak Park in Bloomington.
The annual event honors workers who have died on the job or from occupational illness, with more than 300 local names to be read during the brief ceremony. This year’s observance will include a special tribute to Kevin Lancaster, who was killed in a March 5 incident at Rivian Motors.
Workers’ Memorial Day has been recognized nationally since 1989, marking the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Organizers say the event highlights the ongoing need for workplace safety, noting hundreds of workers nationwide are killed or injured each day in preventable incidents.
