The Normal Police Department participated in the Illinois Department of Transportation’s April Distracted Driving Campaign from April 1-30, focusing on enforcement and public awareness related to distracted driving and other traffic violations.
During the campaign, officers conducted 29 special traffic enforcement details, totaling 124 additional patrol hours throughout the community. Police made 154 traffic stops and issued 151 citations.
Among the citations were 99 distracted driving violations, 31 speeding citations, 12 seatbelt citations and nine other traffic-related offenses. Officers also made two arrests, including one for Driving While License Revoked and another involving a suspect wanted on three McLean County warrants.
Normal Police say distracted driving remains a leading cause of preventable crashes and injuries in Illinois and reminded motorists that using a handheld device while driving is illegal. The campaign was funded through federal highway safety funds administered by IDOT.
