Fifth-grade art students at Oakland Elementary School are helping celebrate the 150th anniversary of Route 66 by displaying their artwork throughout downtown Bloomington this summer.
Under the direction of art teacher Mrs. Geggus, students studied the history and cultural significance of the iconic highway before creating original “hubcap” art pieces inspired by Route 66 landmarks and themes.
The artwork will be featured on planters placed around downtown Bloomington beginning in mid-May, giving residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy student-created pieces while exploring the city center.
The project was made possible through a partnership involving the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, the Citizens’ Beautification Committee, and support from Rivian.
“This project is a wonderful example of how creativity, education, and community collaboration can come together to make Bloomington an even more beautiful place to live and visit,” said Jeff Hindman.
City officials encourage the public to visit downtown Bloomington this summer to view the student artwork displayed in planters across the area.
