The Normal Police Department reported a successful Memorial Day traffic enforcement campaign aimed at reducing impaired driving and increasing seat belt use during one of the year’s busiest travel weekends.
Funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s highway safety grant program, officers conducted 70 hours of targeted patrols. During the campaign, police made 81 traffic stops and issued 78 citations, including 45 for speeding, seven for seat belt violations and four for distracted driving.
Officers also arrested one driver for DUI and another for driving while license revoked. Police say the effort reinforces the importance of buckling up, obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions and never driving impaired. Federal highway safety funds administered by IDOT supported the campaign.
