The Normal Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Illinois in a Fourth of July traffic safety campaign aimed at reducing impaired driving and increasing seat belt use during the holiday travel period.
The enforcement effort runs from June 19 through July 6 and will include additional patrols targeting impaired drivers, speeding, seat belt violations and other dangerous driving behaviors. The department is partnering with the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies statewide.
Police are encouraging motorists to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using rideshare services or public transportation if impaired, and ensuring all passengers are properly buckled up. Drivers are also urged to report suspected impaired motorists by safely pulling over and calling 911.
The campaign is funded through federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and is supported by the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois.
